Orthopedic Services for Pets

Whether they were born with an abnormality, sustain an injury, or develop arthritis in their senior years, your pet may be diagnosed with a wide variety of problems regarding their bones, joints and muscles. Our team here at Cobequid Animal Hospital is equipped to deal with these orthopedic issues. Call us at (902) 865-8110 to learn more.

What types of orthopedic services do you offer?

One of the main types of orthopedic procedures we perform is called Femoral Head Osteotomy (FHO) Surgery. This is the removal of a diseased or damaged hip, by removing the portion of the femur that normally forms the “hip joint” (the head and the neck of the femur). Other procedures we offer at the hospital are fracture repairs, amputations, and Medial Patellar Luxation (which fixes an abnormal kneecap).

What causes orthopedic diseases in pets?

As we touched on above, there are many causes to orthopedic problems. Physical trauma, infections, cancer, immune disorders, age and genetics (some pets are predisposed to developing certain conditions) can all cause these problems.

How should I prepare for my pet’s orthopedic procedure?

Rest assured that well before your pet’s scheduled treatment, your veterinarian will provide you with all the information you need during a one-on-one consultation. Because each condition, procedure and patient will have different needs, it is difficult to provide a general prep plan.
